You never forget your first rave do you? Mine was only a few years ago, in 2014 to be precise, and of course it was at fabric. Before this, classic rock was my jam and I was obsessed with Jimi Hendrix but then my boyfriend encouraged me to go to a Playaz event with him and of course everything changed – as cliche as that sounds. Regardless of the ups and downs the club’s had over the years, you can’t ignore fabric’s reputation as one of the most important music institutions in London. Over the last 19 years, there have been so many otherworldly experiences in the club for people across the world. It’s the place that really champions new and exciting talent and has such a diverse billing over one weekend. With it’s infamous fabriclive parties on the Friday that explores the best of jungle, drum & bass, grime and dubstep (now with the odd Forms event thrown in there) whilst Saturday and Sunday are left to experiment within house and techno. Some of my favourite memories include Ben UFO and Jackmaster dropping Burial’s ‘Temple Sleeper’ at 4am, the magical mornings with Ricardo Villalobos and Craig Richards, a UK techno takeover in Room 2 whilst Underground Resistance performed in Room 1 and John Digweed playing Carl Craig’s remix of Caribou – ‘Your Love Will Set Me Free’ at 8am after a heavy session from Ben Klock. And as we lead up to fabric’s 19th birthday, we share some of the archived sets from the club.
